Find the calm during the storm
When a storm is raging outside, how do you find YOUR calm in the storm?
Or do you not? Do you feel like the storm takes over?
It’s amazing how much life can change in just a short amount of time, like a week. Seven days.
And if we aren’t very careful, we can get totally caught up in the stress and fear of the crisis. We tend to focus on what we are missing out on. We have fear over what may or may not happen. We worry about how quickly things are changing.
Perhaps instead of trying to find the calm during the storm we could focus on how grateful we are for what we do have and what we can do. It’s so easy to allow fear and uncertainty to completely take over- believe me I get it. I too am human. I too can allow my mind to travel down those long dark twisty roads. That being said I can also be in charge of keeping things in perspective and reminding myself to have faith. share joy, love and hope.
Dr. BJ Palmer, the developer of chiropractic used to talk about slipping and checking. In his context it was about veering from your truth of principles and getting back on track. I think it can be applied to most areas of life.
We are all human. It is natural to have a rough day occasionally, get scared, or maybe even frustrated. But the important thing to remember is not to let those feelings take over or to let them ruin the current moment. In moments of overwhelm, I check myself and realize I may be slipping and need to bring myself back.
How to calm the storm:
There are so many ways to check yourself and it’s completely different for everyone. For some it may be mediation, exercise or prayer. For others it may be a gratitude list, a snuggle with your child or a quiet cup of tea. It matters less about what it is and more about how quickly and successfully you can bring your mindset back.
For me personally, finding my calm always starts with a chiropractic adjust (so my mind and body can calm down). Next comes meditation and a gratitude list. Moving my body is always on the list regardless if it’s something intense like HIIT or weight lifting or something less impact like barre class or yoga. Mixed in to all these things are some positive affirmations. Lastly is surrounding myself with things and people I love. My happy place is most definitely the beach with my family (including my amazing Portuguese Water Dog, Palmer).
There are many health benefits to having a positive mindset. To speaking positive affirmations.
There are many negative health effects to allowing stress to take over. For one it causes you to become “stuck” in a sympathetic (fight or flight) dominant state. Often times people will notice when they have increased stress for long periods of time their quality of sleep will change. Their immunity will decrease. Their digestion can be affected and they can have strong cravings towards carbs and sugars. They may become increasingly anxious or irritable.
I urge you always, but especially at times like these, to find what works for you. Discover what it takes for you to find the calm during the storm. It’s a process and an evolution so enjoy discovering it!
Remember, we are all in this together. I am here for you now and always! I’d love to hear the ways you find the calm during the storm!
